Simon Kinberg Still Writing a “Battlestar Galactica” Movie

Back in October of 2020, news came that Simon Kinberg was working on a “Battlestar Galactica” project for Universal. Not just ‘working’ on it, either. Kinberg, who’s credits include things like “X-Men: Dark Phoenix” and that disasterous “Fan4stic,” was writing it.

Much as we hoped the project was dead (Sam Esmail‘s rebooted tv series which appears to be), Kinberg’s film is very much still in process. He spoke recently with Collider, and gave an update on the project no one really wants.

When asked if his film project would tie in directly to Ronald D. Moore‘s incredible reimagining of the classic “Battlestar Galactica.” Kinberg admitted “there are connections, but it is certainly not simply a continuation or a remake of Ron Moore’s masterpiece.”

“We are in the process of going out to directors and the hope is to attach a director and start prepping the movie this year. It’s a megillah, humongous film and the prep will be a very long prep period so I would imagine even if we attached a director today it would take six, nine months to prep this movie properly. So at the earliest, we’d be shooting at the end of this year. We’d probably be shooting at the beginning of next year. Time will tell who the director is and then you or someone else will tell who the director is.”

Kinberg went on to comment about Esmail’s show, too.

“In terms of the situation with Sam and the show, I can’t say too much about it other than there is synergy between the two enterprises and constant communication between us. We’ve become close and been having a really good time together and there will be, for lack of a better phrase and it’s an overused phrase, a shared universe.”

We’ll let you know what we hear about this and other projects.

You can watch the original 1978 “Battlestar Galactica” series on Tubi for free here. RDM’s reimagined “BSG” is available on NBC’s streaming service Peacock. “Blood & Chrome” is available on Amazon here, and “Caprica” on Amazon here.
