A question that’s been asked a million times! A thousand times!…okay, fine, maybe only a few times.

It really boils down to decades of experience, mere seconds of misunderstanding. Sort of a ‘lifelong journalists gets mistaken for influencers on a red carpet, hijinks ensue’ kind of thing.

Just picture it…two reputable members of the press check in to cover an event, only to discover a clerical error has occurred. Instead of the usual outlet-name-spot-on-the-carpet, a new descriptor has been added. The “i” word.

For the rest of the night, we are asked about this addition. “New direction?” one writer inquired. “That’s different,” another quipped. “You? INfluencers?” a previous collaborator laughed. To which, we responded, with a rousing “more like….BAD influencers, amirite??” You get the idea.

It sort of became a badge of honor. Why YES, we ARE bad influencers.

Spoiler- we’re not actually *really* bad or anything. We’re pretty damn good at what we do. We’re professionals with years of projects, bylines, and endeavors to our credit. Interviews, actual investigative stories, panel moderation, reviews, event production- we’ve done it all.

Somehow creating buying trends at a nearby hotspot? It has happened!

Gone viral more than once? Also yes.

Increased audience interest in movies and shows after we cover it? Definitely.

Journalistic integrity in our reporting on ALL subjects? Absolutely.

So, join Mab and Dana for this next professional chapter for whatever the hell happens next. We’ll see you out there!

Mary Anne Butler (Mab) got her start in album reviews and live concert coverage for a nationally published (print) music magazine as a teenager. She eventually transitioned to online media, writing for such sites as UGO/IGN, ComicsOnline, Geek Magazine, Ace of Geeks, Aggressive Comix (Editor-in-Chief), Bleeding Cool (News Editor), Nerdbot (as Editor-In-Chief), and now [Bad]Influencers, where she is Editor-in-Chief. Over the past 15 years, she’s built a well-known reputation at conventions across the globe as a cosplayer (occasionally), photographer (constantly), panelist and moderator (mostly), and reporter (always). Interviews, reviews, observations, breaking news, and objective reporting are the name of the game for the founder of Harkonnen Knife Fight, a Dune-themed band. She also produces award-winning immersive events, including Wasteland Weekend and Neotropolis.
