Bleeding Cool contributor Rich Epstein was at NYCC 2017 checking out the annual Katie Cook event:

New York Comic Con isn’t just for adults — there’s plenty for kids to do, as well. One of the more fun events every year is Katie Cook hosting a how-to session teaching youngsters how to draw some of their favorite characters. Cook took suggestions from the packed room before answering a few questions.

This year, the lessons included characters Harry Potter and Hermione, Wonder Woman, Princess Leia, a porg, Thor, Ash and Pikachu, and a potato. Yes, Cook taught kids how to draw a potato — a sneak peek from her upcoming how-to-draw book. Cook assured the children this was not a joke, but is an actual lesson in her book. Lucky kids whose picks were used by Cook were able to take home the signed pictures.

As to the questions and answers, the crowd learned that after graduating from the College of Creative Studies, she worked for Target doing graphic design. She now spends roughly 13 hours a day working, but absolutely loves her job. If she could work on any series or character that she hasn’t yet had an opportunity to, it would be J.K. Rowling‘s Harry Potter.
