Will a Golden Globe become Deadpool’s most prized possession?

Who all remembers when they first saw that low-quality version of the Deadpool test footage that “leaked” back in 2014? It was from there that the fandom started clamoring for it to be made into a full film. Audiences were seeming to be willing to overlook what happened the last time star Ryan Reynolds put on a superhero suit (the god-awful Green Lantern film) or the last time he played Deadpool in arguably the worst of the X-men films back in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. With the grassroots support behind it, Fox for once decided to grow a pair and let a comic-sourced film get made true to the source material.

Who was there when the trailer debuted in Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con? The reaction was so intense in the room that it was the first time that the AV crew played the trailer through for a second time (which hasn’t happened for any other film, btw). Everyone lost their collective minds in excitement around the film, and it finally released to be the highest grossing R-rated film in history.

Now it continues to keep on rolling by breaking through another barrier – by getting recognition on the end of year award circuit. Sure, superhero films regularly are in the mix for various Special Effects categories, but they rarely get any love in the “big categories” like acting, writing, or best film. The last time a superhero film had been nominated at the Golden Globes, it’d been all the way back to 2005’s The Incredibles. Sure, Birdman got a wide range of awards, but strictly speaking it’s not a superhero movie.

Reynolds was likely still sleeping off the effects of the after-parties from last night’s Critics’ Choice Awards where he won the Entertainer Of The Year award, when it was revealed this morning that the Golden Globes had nominated Deadpool for both Best Picture in a Comedy or Musical, and Reynolds himself for Best Comedy or Musical Actor.

We have to picture Reynolds sitting at home, munching on a chimichanga, and smiling to himself because he knew all along that it would turn out this way.
