Universal’s “Bride of Frankenstein” Eyeing Bill Condon To Helm

It would appear that Universal is no holds barred with their revamping of the classic Monsters Universe, and the next title up to bat may be Bride of Frankenstein. Back in 2015 writer David Koepp was put in charge of the script after his work on Inferno, his quote about the project:

It’s one of my favorite scripts I’ve written in years because if you reimagine the Frankenstein story, it gets into so many issues of men trying to feel dominant over women. To create someone who then says, ‘You don’t own me,’ it becomes a tale of liberation.

Just a little bit ago Deadline reported that Universal was eyeing director Bill Condon for the hot seat, fresh off his success for Disney with Beauty and The Beast.  Sure, the Oscar nominee sounds pretty promising, until you remember Condon ALSO was responsible for Twilight Breaking Dawn 1 & 2, but then redeems his credits list with Dreamgirls.

This is one of those times where yes, maybe it would be better to NOT remake such a classic piece of cinema, but an updated retelling *could* be interesting.  Think about how good Penny Dreadful was, bringing together the macabre tales of yore with slick editing and a killer score.

Not much is known about the Bride of Frankenstein project, and only time will tell.  I bet Universal will either move lightning quick or drop it after the success/failure of their next monster reboot The Mummy opens.
