“The Marvels” Clip Releases: Too Little Too Late?

Please don’t get us wrong- we still have very high hopes for Nia DaCosta‘s (“Candyman“) “Captain Marvel” sequel, “The Marvels.” But, it sure seems like Marvel Studios and most of online court of opinions have given up on the flick. Early box office tracking made it look like the 32nd MCU release might be bowing with the lowest take yet.

This is unfortunate, for many reasons. DaCosta is a great director, and her addition to the continual boys’ club in the MCU is a welcome one. This, paired with the still-ongoing narrative of Oscar winner Brie Larson “not being nice to men” because of a comment she made on the original “Captain Marvel” press junket being blown out of proportions. If you’ll recall, when Larson was doing her press tour for the film, the majority of reporters, journalists, and interviewers she was officially speaking to in studio-sanctioned (and organized) junkets were white men. (As a female journalist who takes part in press junkets, I can absolutely confirm the validity of this comment, especially at the higher-profile level of projects.)

This was something Larson wanted to see change, and she said so. This of course was not taken well by the [*checks notes*] also-boys-club of online ‘journalists,’ which lead to the first film being review bombed.

We’re all fully expecting the sequel to suffer a similar fate, and that sucks. Especially since the action in “The Marvels” looks pretty damn good.

A new clip from the film was officially released by Marvel Studios, a first for the Disney-owned industry leader. Could this be their last-ditch effort to get people interested? Maybe. Is it going to have the desired effect? Probably not.

But the last you could do is see the film and make up your own mind.

“The Marvels” will see Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) get her powers entangled with Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel (Iman Vellani) and Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris). The trio now has to work together to save the universe. The film will also star Gary Lewis, Park Seo-joon, Zenobia Shroff, Mohan Kapur, Saagar Shaikh, and Samuel L. Jackson.

“The Marvels” hits theaters November 10th, 2023.
