“Spider-Man” Honeymoon Over for Marvel Studios and Sony

It would appear, according to multiple outlets, that Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures could not reach an agreement over the joint custody of one Peter Parker, aka “Spider-Man.”

As it stands currently, Marvel Studios will not produce any further “Spider-Man” films, due to an inability to reach a new agreement that would give Disney a financing stake.

Deadline claims sources ensure them there are two additional wall-crawler films with director Jon Watts, and star Tom Holland. With this new development, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige would NOT be the lead creative producer on those.

This decision on Sony’s part is an interesting one, as the agreed sharing of “Spider-Man” seemed to do well in the live-action film market. That said, “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” was most assuredly a hit, and plans are going forward for multiple spinoffs and sequels in the works.

“Spider-Man: Far From Home” grossed roughly $1.1 billion world-wide, fitting in nicely with it’s Marvel Cinematic Universe cousins.

We’ll let you know what else we hear about this story, and what it might mean for the future of the web-slinger.

    ***UPDATE***

It would appear that Sony Pictures has now commented on the situation, via the studio’s official Twitter account.

Much of today’s news about Spider-Man has mischaracterized recent discussions about Kevin Feige’s involvement in the franchise. We are disappointed, but respect Disney’s decision not to have him continue as a lead producer of our next live action Spider-Man film. (1/3)

Kevin is terrific and we are grateful for his help and guidance and appreciate the path he has helped put us on, which we will continue. (3/3)
