In 1973, there were very few Hollywood film industry award systems in place that would acknowledge the awesomeness of genre film and television. That’s where founder Donald A. Reed and his Saturn Awards come into play. Currently the oldest Award ceremony dedicated to reward science fiction, fantasy and horror films, the event celebrated it’s 43rd annual show on June 28th, 2017.
The Saturn Awards are presented annually by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films; they were initially created to honor science fiction, fantasy, and horror on film, but have since grown to reward other films belonging to genre fiction, as well as television and home media releases. True, in the past few years the categories have grown to include some projects that aren’t quite as genre as others, but popular culture is flush with heroes and aliens lately.
President and Executive Producer Robert Holguin, along with Producer/Writers Bradley Marcus and Kevin Marcus (The Marcus Brothers) were on hand for another year of awesomeness as the show took up residence at the famous Castaway Restaurant perched atop a Burbank hill. There was a bit of a scare when a wildfire moved extremely close to the facility, resulting in local home evacuations and some tense time during tech rehearsal.

Obviously, the physical award is a representation of the planet Saturn, with its rings composed of film. The statue is sizeable and heavy, if you ever have the chance to hold one, its weight will shock you.
