Original ‘Unbeatable’ Tetris Finally Beat by 13-Year Old

Some never thought it would happen, but it finally has! The original console version of Tetris has, for the first time in its history, been beaten by a human. And not just any human, 13-year-old Willis Gibson, who goes by blue scuti in the gaming world. True, there is no real way to ‘beat’ the game technically, but Gibson made it to the infamous ‘kill screen’ in 39 minutes, a fete only done by AI until now.

Tetris doesn’t have what one would consider an ending. In fact, as players discovered ways to get further in the game, some weird quirks started appearing. This is in fact what ended Gibson’s game on December 21st, 2023. (The AP actually has a very detailed breakdown of the various history of players trying to ‘beat’ the game- highly suggested reading.)

“Congratulations to ‘blue scuti’ for achieving this extraordinary accomplishment, a feat that defies all preconceived limits of this legendary game,” Tetris CEO Maya Rogers said in a statement about Gibson’s monumental game.

Tetris celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. Watch Gibson’s reaction to the win below:
