    “Krypton”: Meet Superman’s Grandfather

Man of Steel had a polarizing effect on Superman fans of all ages; Krypton and a brief history of the House of El specifically.  One of the most enlightened people in the universe are just bad terraformers? Jor-El likes to run around in his underwear?  Writer David S. Goyer gave us a slightly different backstory than the doomed planet we’ve known, and many viewers wanted more of that world.

Luckily for those fans, SyFy lept at the chance to have a piece of the tv superhero pie, greenlighting Krypton, a prequel to Man of Steel. The story as we know it thus far will center around Jor-El’s father Seg-El, and the beginning of the ties between House of El and House of Zod.  Maybe if we’re REALLY lucky, we’ll get the Kandorian War.  What?  A girl can hope.

Anyhow, London born Cameron Cuffe (Florence Foster Jenkins) has been cast as Seg El.  He’s got the trademark Kryptonian jawline, but hasn’t been in enough things to fully formulate an opinion on how he may perform in the role.  I’m vastly curious however, to see how the story builds and the lines are drawn.

Another English face, Georgina Campbell (Broadchurch) has already been announced as Lyta Zod, General Zod’s grandmother.

David S. Goyer and showrunner Damian Kindler will be executive producing Krypton for Goyer’s Phantom Four. Colm McCarthy serves as co-executive producer and will direct the pilot from a story and teleplay by Goyer & Ian Goldberg.  The pilot will be filmed in Serbia, at some point this year.

Details are still razor thin, but early reports say we’ll be seeing MUCH more of the Kryptonian flora and fauna in the first 15 minutes of Man of Steel.  Possibly other colonized worlds, too, which leaves the Citadel door wide open for other popular DC characters to make appearances down the line if all goes well and the series is well received.

We’ll let you know as more information becomes available.
