We are very sorry to report the passing of “90210” star Shannen Doherty. The actress lost her battle with cancer on Saturday, July 13th. This news was confirmed by Doherty’s longtime rep, Leslie Sloane.

Writer/director/actor Kevin Smith penned a tribute to the late actress, who he credits with allowing his third film, “Mallrats,” being made at all.

“Shannen was a true talent and she became a good friend, but lest anyone forget, she was the only reason Mallrats got green-lit in 1995,” Smith wrote. “That’s because Shannen was one of the most famous people on the planet – and the fact that she picked Mallrats as her first follow-up to 90210 *made* that movie happen.”

    Doherty was 53.
