Will “Hellraiser” TV Series Have Such Sights to Show Us?

We are in a world where at least three different “Hellraiser” projects / reboots have been talked about in the last few months.

Yes, really.

Back in February, CinemaBlend spoke with Jason Blum about the possibility of Blumhouse taking over the reigns of two horror franchises (“Scream” and “Hellraiser“) and his response was surprising:

Yes, we definitely have [discussed it]. We’re looking – there’s nothing happening with either one of those things – but we’re definitely looking at it, and it’s definitely something I’d be open to.

Then in May, a report from Variety said that David S. Goyer was going to be helming a reboot of “Hellraiser” for Spyglass.

Goyer said in a statement that he’s “been a fan of Clive’s work since the original Books of Blood paperbacks and ‘The Hellbound Heart’ novella. Having the chance to reimagine Pinhead and the Cenobites for a new audience is a nightmare-come-true. Gary is a true fan as well and we’re committed to making something dark and visceral.”

Spyglass’s Gary Barber said this will be a “loyal, yet evolved reimagining,” and that he and “Clive and I go back more than 30 years together. For generations, his brilliantly twisted and imaginative ‘Hellraiser’ haunted the minds of moviegoers with its searing imagery of Pinhead. David is the perfect storyteller to continue Clive’s vision for a new theatrical version of ‘Hellraiser.’ ”

Cut to today, and a report from Deadline that Pinhead will be headed to the small screen AS WELL with “It” producer Roy Lee and “Ready Player One” producer Dan Farah teaming up with producers Lawrence Kuppin, David Salzman and Eric Gardner- who have controlled the “Hellraiser” TV rights since 1989 when New World was sold.

The description for this tv series is EXACTLY what Goyer said he wanted to do, so we’re unclear if this is that same project or a brand new one that’ll follow the same storyline.

Deadline goes on to say that the producing team seeking a writer-showrunner, and won’t chose a home for the series til that decision is made.

It would be interesting to see what any of these possible projects would do with “Hellraiser”, although some of us aren’t too keen on the idea of a reboot. [DOUG BRADLEY FOR LYFE!]

We feel that Clive Barker said it best when he spoke with Wired (which is an amazing interview, and highly suggested) about the dark magic of Pinhead and the resulting hellscape of the character’s world:

“Hell is reimagined by every generation. We have to reinvent the worst so that we can reinvent the best.”
