Hauntingly Good: Apple TV’s Definitely Not Cursed “Widow’s Bay”

If you aren’t watching Apple TV‘s “Widow’s Bay,” what even are you doing with your evenings?! While I personally am still pining for HBO Max’s INCREDIBLE “Perry Mason,” having a new Matthew Rhys-led series is helping. Especially one this entertaining and well done.

Imagine a comedy-heavy take on the collective New England horror stories of one Stephen King, with a dose of “Jaws,” “The Office,” and some refreshing good writing. Add spectacular performances, great editing, and perhaps some of the best art direction in a contemporary piece of television. That’s “Widow’s Bay” in a nutshell.

If you look up the series on Google, THIS is what you get as your result.

There are plenty of little love letters to those aforementioned inspirations. My current favorite is this ode to Amity Island.

Series creator Katie Dippold has some interesting credits to her name, including “Parks & Recreation,” the Melissa McCarthy / Sandra Bullock comedy “The Heat,” and the legendary Babadook at a Halloween party moment. What a legacy!

Without spoilers, I want to HIGHLY recommend this series. If you’re not on board within the first 10 minutes- hell, FIVE minutes, really- this show isn’t for you. But you don’t have to take our word for it, because Guillermo del Toro also loves it!

Logline: The mayor of a New England town resolves to turn it into the next tourist hot spot, despite local warnings that it’s cursed.

“Widow’s Bay” stars Rhys, Kate O’Flynn, Kevin Carroll, Dale Dickey, Kingston Rumi Southwick, Toby Huss (“Halt & Catch Fire“), and Stephen Root. Season one is currently streaming on Apple TV. While we’re not sure if a second season is in the cards, a 97% Rotten Tomatoes score and ever-growing fanbase makes us hopeful.
