Game Of Thrones’ Image Teases The Return Of Tyrion’s Season 1 Assassin’s Dagger

It looks like a very specific weapon is about to make a return to the screen in the upcoming season of HBO’s Game of Thrones. If we remember way back into the mists of time in season one, when Bran (played by Isaac Hempstead Wright) was still recovering from having been pushed out of that window by Jamie Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) an assassin was sent to attempt to finish the job. The weapon he had with him was a wickedly curved Valyrian-steel dagger.

Fortunately Bran’s mother Catelyn and his direwolf Summer manage to kill the assassin. It’s the discovery of that dagger, and that it’s last owner was Tyrion, led in large part towards escalating the conflict between the Lannister and Stark Houses. It was keen eyed Redditers that pointed out that the last time we’d seen it was in a scene in the Tower of the Hand on Ned Stark’s desk (it feels like forever ago that poor ol’ Ned was still alive). But after than it just fell off the radar.

Then last week Entertainment Weekly teased out one of it’s upcoming Game of Thrones covers which seems to show the newly returned to Westeros Arya Stark (played by Maisie Williams) wearing the blade at her hip.

While that seemed close to the right look, readers weren’t sure if it was indeed the blade from season one. Now HBO Nordic has added an image on their Facebook page which pretty much clears up the question:

The translation of the first line simply reads:

Is your kitchen ready? Winter is coming.

Given her having spent the last season off in Braavos training to become one of the Faceless Men (a society of religious assassins who have the ability to transform their faces and forms), and her recent return to begin delivering some of the much deserved and belated payback, that she would somehow acquire that particular Valyrian dagger to use in her efforts gives it all a certain level of symmetry. Her first strike at House Frey by killing Lord Walder after having served up his sons to him in a meat pie will give the Stark enemies something to think about, even if they don’t know who’s doing the killing.

Now if we only were to get Lady Stoneheart to make an appearance.
