Gale Force Nine Unleashes “Dune” Board Game Details

Remember when it was announced that the gaming rights for Frank Herbert‘s “Dune” had been picked up by Gale Force Nine? We remember, because it was absolutely AMAZING news that we’re still excited about.

Just today, some of GF9’s plans for the upcoming board game based in the world of Arakkis were revealed.

John-Paul Brisigotti of Gale Force Nine had previously commented on the release, saying: “We wanted to do something classic and have the original game [from] Peter Olotka and the guys that wrote the original Dunegame. The game is great, it was great in ’78 and still great today–it needs a graphic update… But we’ve basically taken the Avalon Hill game and Peter and the guys updated the rules to modernize them a little, but fundamentally that classic game will be out in the summer, probably in August.”

Players will assume control of six different factions- including Bene Gesserit and House Harkonnen- each with their own blend of advantages and special abilities.  Over ten rounds, the factions compete for control of Arrakis and its all-important Spice.

The set includes 1 gameboard, 5 player shields, 5 player aids, 30 large leader discs, tokens and player markers for each faction, 156 Spice tokens, 2 Battle Wheels, and 166 cards.  The game will have “quick start” rules as well as advanced rules for the more discerning Fedaykin, as well as a synopsis of the Dune story.  Dune is intended for 2 to 6 players, and takes at least two hours to play.  MSRP is $50.00.

Yes, this is an updated (and frankly more cleaned-up) version of Avalon Hill’s 70’s Frank Herbert’s Dune game.

BUT OMG WE WANT TO PLAY IT RIGHT NOW.

Yes, Gale Force Nine’s license also includes Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures’ upcoming feature film adaptation of “Dune” from director Denis Villeneuve, as well as the announced television series about the Bene Gesserit sisterhood (possibly the implantation of the missionaria protectiva?).

We’ll do our best to keep you updated about all things “Dune“, but until then- Shai Hulud.
