Edgar Wright’s “Running Man” to be ‘Very Intense, Dangerous’

Filmmaker Edgar Wright is embarking on a new project. One we’re pretty excited for, not gonna lie. A remake of the 1987 sci-fi dystopian classic, “The Running Man,” which in turn was based on the Stephen King aka Richard Bachman 1982 novel. Glen Powell (“Hit Man,” “Top Gun: Maverick“) stars as Ben Richards, the role originally played by Arnold Schwarzenegger.

The story is all about a government-backed game show where Richards and other contestants had to fight to win, survive, and live.

 “One of the things about the book that I loved was the fact that Ben Richards is out in the world on his own, so it’s like the deadliest game of hide and seek,” Wright told Empire Magazine in their newest issue. “It does feel like making a road movie in a lot of ways: a very intense, dangerous road movie,” he adds. “Ben is moving through different environments and meeting different people as he tries to survive 30 days out in the wild.”

Wright’s remake cast also includes Katy O’Brien (“Love Lies Bleeding“) as another contestand, Josh Brolin (“Dune“) as producer of the gameshow Damon Killian, and Lee Pace (“The Fall,” “Foundation“) as the actual ‘villain.’

“I felt it was important to see somebody who hadn’t really done something like this before,” Wright continued. “It’s similar to Bruce Willis, when he was still the guy from Moonlighting, before he did Die Hard, where that adds to the suspense. Can they make it?” 

“The Running Man” is expected to hit theaters November 7th, 2025.
