“Defiance”: S3 Premiere, So Many Bodies

I’m not sure how I feel right now.  I’m a fan of killing characters to keep the story going, for chaos theory (thank you, Dr. Malcolm), for making scores of complacent audience members gasp and curse.  Defiance did that with their stellar two part season 3 premiere episodes “The World We Seize” and “The Last Unicorns”.

I should remind you guys that I’ve been a supporter of the show since it’s first season, because I recognized SyFy attempting to return to their roots of science fiction entertainment.  The show has continued to get better and more intense as it goes, the tech and FX growing with the characters.  The one complaint I’ve had however is the lack of cohesion from the season finales to the season premieres.  They don’t really fit together as flowing chapters.  This could be because each of the three seasons have hit without knowing if the following season would happen.

The series, judging by tonight’s episode, is going to continue it’s darkly intense direction, one that I can’t wait to see continue.

If you don’t want spoilers for tonight’s episode, click away now.  Go catch up on the first two seasons, and pick up the soundtrack(s) while you’re at it.

Alright then.  High body count, let’s jump right in.

Yeah.  Three members of one family gone within five minutes.  I wasn’t expecting Stahma to chose who she did when handed Datak’s blade by the new Irathient military leader in town, Rahm Tak (played by Lee Tergesen). This guy is gonna be a problem for everyone in Defiance.

“The McCawleys were humans, but they were our humans,” Datak says later.

The longstanding fan question of “what kind of grandmother would Sarah Connor be” is answered as Linda Hamilton’s character Pilar McCawley remains in custody of her daughter Christie, her son-in-law Alak Tar, and her newborn halfblood grandson Luke.  A fun bit of info passed on from the series creator/producer is that this year, the main alien characters’ eyes will be done differently than run of the mil sclera lenses:

This year baby Luke, Doc Yewll and Irisa all have digital eyes makeup. All hail VFX whiz Gary Hutzel! #Defiance

Nolan and Irisa wake up from their 7 month slumber after the destruction of the Voltan Arc thanks to our two newest aliens of the Olmec race, Kindzi (Nichole Galicia) and her father T’evgin (Conrad Coates).

I have to say, the Omec suits are GORGEOUS though, high marks to the costume department for the designs.

Let’s talk about Doc for a minute.  Probably one of the best written characters on SyFy, at least judging on quips and sarcasm, sure seems like Yewll has had her share of issues during the 7 months.  AND she can play a helluva game of poker.

Even WITH the deaths in the episode, I’ll be thinking about the Indogene’s skin harvesting for awhile.  Hats off to everyone in the scene, it couldn’t have been easy.

Thank you SyFy for bringing us this fantastic series, I can’t wait til next Friday.
