Allman Brothers Band Co-Founder Gregg Allman Dies At 69

The music world is grieving today on word from Billboard that the co-founder of southern rock group The Allman Brothers, Gregg Alman has passed away at his home at the age of 69. Gregg was one of the creators and performers of such classics as “Midnight Rider,” “Melissa” and “Whipping Post.”

A statement was posted on Gregg’s official website stating:

He passed away peacefully at his home in Savannah, Georgia. Gregg struggled with many health issues over the past several years. During that time, Gregg considered being on the road playing music with his brothers and solo band for his beloved fans, essential medicine for his soul. Playing music lifted him up and kept him going during the toughest of times.

Gregg had been the frontman for the group for more than four decades. His brother and band co-founder Duane was  killed in a motorcycle accident in November 1971, just as their music career was taking off. Then followed the death of bassist Berry Oakley barely more than a year later. Gregg and the band became as well known for their stoic survival as they were for their music.

Gregg is survived by his wife, the actress and singer Cher, and their son Elijah Blue, and his other children Michael, Devon, Delilah and Layla.
