ABC Studios Developing Interracial ‘Bewitched’ Reboot

Still one of my personal favorite catchy sitcom themes, the magical Bewitched series from the 1960s is apparently getting yet another reboot.

Perhaps you’ll recall the good-idea-on-paper but terribly executed Bewitched film from 2005 starring Nicole Kidman and Will Ferrell that sort of brought the idea of a reboot back to the conversation, but ultimately led to nothing. Then in 2014, a ‘sequel’ idea was approached, a pilot order was placed, but nothing ended up happening.

Cut to just this month, when Black-ish creator Kenya Barris (who just excited ABC for a big Netflix deal) on his way out the door sold an idea for an “interracial reboot” of Bewitched. Deadline confirms that the network has given a pilot production commitment for the project, which was written by both Barris and Black-ish writer/producer Yamara Taylor.

The outlet goes on to detail the basic information about the reboot at this time, which says it will be written by Barris and Taylor:

Samantha, a hardworking black single mom who happens to be a witch, marries Darren, a white mortal who happens to be a bit of a slacker. They struggle to navigate their differences as she discovers that even when a black girl is literally magic, she’s still not as powerful as a decently tall white man with a full head of hair in America.

There is no expected release date for the show yet, nor is there any news on casting or a showrunner. We’ll let you know when we find out, for sure.
