“From Hell”: Jack The Ripper Heads To FX

It looks like the “From Hell” graphic novel by Alan Moore and Eddie Campbell is moving forward as a tv series at FX.  You might recall a 2001 film starring Johnny Depp based on the same material; Don Murphy who produced the film, is executive producing. David Arata (Children Of Men) will write the adaptation.  The directorial team of the Hugh brothers are not involved in the series.

The story follows famed serial killer Jack The Ripper, amidst possibilities of his identity and motives.  The name of the graphic novel is taken from the first words of the “From Hell” letter, which some authorities believe was an authentic message sent from the killer in 1888.

I’m honestly surprised the team at American Horror Story isn’t jumping into the pit on this, considering the dark macabre hold they’ve had on the network for the past three years.

Deadline reports “From Hell” is considered one of the top 10 graphic novels of all time. It came out as a comic book in multiple parts between 1989 and 1996 and was collected in 1999. Despite its size and cost it has never been out of print. What sets From Hell apart from other comics is the fact that it features 46 pages of footnotes in the back that give the story depth and detail.

More than likely, Johnny Depp will have no part of the series, but it’d be interesting if he did.
