    Syfy’s Defiance Minisodes

Last year, SyFy Channel returned to the world of original science fiction tv series with their adventure show Defiance.  One of the more interesting aspects of the show was it’s timed launch to coincide with an MMO video game.  The initial idea being that actions within the Defiance game would eventually come to influence/be influenced by the happenings on the show.

I tried MANY times to play the beta of the game, and would never launch for me, sadly.  I thoroughly enjoyed the show, though, and the TWO soundtracks released for both Defiance titles (show & game) from composer Bear McCreary.  (“Flirting With Disaster” from the show’s score is pretty awesome to drive to, and is performed by Young Beautiful In A Hurry.)

The general gist of the show is a post-alien invasion terraformed Earth which is a measure of wild western boomtowns with some technologies and given by other species.  Wiki’s official description says:  “The story begins in the year 2046: Earth has been radically transformed, causing changes in topography, the extinction of plant and animal species, and the emergence of new species. The series follows Joshua Nolan (Grant Bowler) and his adopted Irathient daughter Irisa (Stephanie Leonidas), who have put down roots in Defiance, a city-state community where humans and several extraterrestrial races, collectively known as Votans, coexist over the partially re-built ruins of St. Louis.”

And then to bridge the gap between the ending of season 1, (which if you haven’t caught up on, do so now before going further in this piece) SyFy released these five minisodes.  We get to see how Nolan and Irissa met, how he ‘rescued’ her from the snake cultists, and how their father/daughter relationship began.  There are five parts to “The Lost Ones”, and you can watch them all for FREE on SyFy’s website.
