“Wayne’s World” Director on “Bohemian Rhapsody” Rumors

Perhaps the most iconic sing-along moment in movie history, “Wayne’s World” reinvigorated fans of Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody.” Who hasn’t headbanged along to the tune in their car?

The scene from Penelope Spheeris‘s 1992 film based on two “Saturday Night Live” characters has been the source of rumors and chatter pretty much since it premiered. Was it always supposed to be that song? What about the Guns n’ Roses rumor? Did Freddie Mercury even LIKE the addition?

Turns out, the answers are all pretty easily explained. Well, as long as you’re Spheeris. She recently chatted with Variety about the big 3-0 anniversary of the film, and touched on this very subject.

Variety: Were there any issues with getting the rights to “Bohemian Rhapsody”?

Spheeris: “When I got the script, Mike [Meyers] had already written ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ into it. So I can’t take credit for choosing that piece of music. I can take credit for how it was shot. That’s another urban legend about the dissension on the choice of song. Some people say that I wanted to have a Guns n’ Roses song in there, but that’s absolutely false because I was mad at Guns n’ Roses at the time because they wouldn’t participate in my ‘Metal Years’ movie a year or so before. So I wasn’t gonna put them in a movie. I don’t think that way anymore, but whatever. Some people say Lorne Michaels wanted to use Guns n’ Roses. But I doubt that that was true because I’ve known Lorne [Michaels] for a long time and I don’t think he was really tuned into Guns n’ Roses at that time.”

Oh, and Freddie Mercury absolutely loved the scene.
