“Waterworld” TV Series in the Works from Dan Trachtenberg

This is absolutely not the post apocalyptic news we expected to report on today, but apparently a tv series based on Universal’s “Waterworld” is happening. The original film imagined Earth after the polar ice caps had melted and the sea level rose to such heights that the oceans became the surface of the planet.

Humans obviously had to adapt with mutations including gills, as displayed by Kevin Costner‘s lead character.

It would appear that Dan Trachtenberg (“10 Cloverfield Lane,” “The Boys“) has been tapped to direct the series for Universal Television, so says original producer John Davis.

“We’re going to do the streaming version of that movie, the continuation of that movie, 20 years later. All those people [from the original film], 20 years later,” Davis told Collider.

Davis’ producing partner John Fox did admit that “we’re not 100% sure on the approach to the show. But definitely, we’re in the building stages right now.”

This could mean “Waterworld” the tv series finds a home at Universal’s streaming service, Peacock.

Obviously this is still in the very early stages, so we’ll let you know what we hear about this and other news.
