True News: Drew Goddard to Write, Direct New “The Matrix” Film

We are staring at the 25th anniversary of the Wachowski sisters’ landmark film, “The Matrix.” While it borrowed heavily from Hong Kong action films of the era, it really did set the tone for most of the films that came after it. Starring Keanu Reeves, Carrie Anne Moss, Hugo Weaving, and Laurence Fishburne, the highly Y2K styled tale spins a Jesus savior narrative in the background of a “Terminator” esque AI machine uprising and enslavement of the human race.

The big news today is that Drew Goddard (“The Martian,” “Cabin in the Woods“) will write and direct a new film in “The Matrix” world for Warner Bros. Pictures. While Lily and Lana Wachowski will NOT directly involved as writers or directors, they are on board as executive producers.

“It is not hyperbole to say The Matrix films changed both cinema and my life,” said Goddard about the news. “Lana and Lilly’s exquisite artistry inspires me on a daily basis, and I am beyond grateful for the chance to tell stories in their world.”

“Drew came to Warner Bros. with a new idea that we all believe would be an incredible way to continue the Matrix world, by both honoring what Lana and Lilly began over 25-years ago and offering a unique perspective based on his own love of the series and characters,” Warner Bros. Motion Pictures president of production Jesse Ehrman said. “The entire team at Warner Bros. Discovery is thrilled for Drew to be making his new Matrix film, adding his vision to the cinematic canon the Wachowskis’ spent a quarter of a century building here at the studio.”

There aren’t any plot details known as of yet. Likewise for casting, or even a possible production start. We’ll let you know what we hear about this and other news.
