The Return of Danny Torrance’s “The Shining” in “Doctor Sleep” Trailer

There are few films with the reputation that comes with Stanley Kubrick‘s seminal adaptation of Stephen King‘s novel “The Shining”. Imagine everyone’s surprise when almost 40 years later, Warner Bros. Pictures releases a film based on the sequel novel, “Doctor Sleep”.

Mike Flanagan (Oculus, Ouija: Origin Of Evil) is directing the picture, and is no stranger to the world of King as he’d recently tackled Netflix’s Gerald’s Game based on one of King’s novellas.  Trevor Macy will produce along with Vertigo Entertainment’s Jon Berg.

Ewan MacGregor stars as adult Danny Torrance (the boy from the original novel and film) as an adult, who is struggling with alcoholism, and remains traumatized by the sinister events that occurred at the Overlook Hotel when he was a child. He soon finds a new purpose when he forms a psychic connection with a girl who shares his “shining” ability.

If some of those iconic scenes look just a TINY bit different from the original The Shining film, it’s because only one of the shots there is from the 1980 movie.

“There’s only one shot in the trailer you saw that’s actually his footage, and that’s the shot of the bloody elevators. Everything else is us. Everything else is our recreation,” Flanagan explained during a press event. “So I don’t want to spoil to what extent and what specific, outside of what you already got to see, what we have kind of been able to revisit form Kubrick’s world. But I can say that everything that we decided to use, our intention was always to detail and reverence, and making sure that we were doing it properly, with the hope that even the most rabid cinephiles might not be able to tell the difference with some of our frames and some of his.”

Doctor Sleep is due to hit theaters on November 8th.
