If you’ve noticed, one of the films we’re most anticipating this year (I mean Star Wars notwithstanding) is The Martian.  Based on the fantastically heavy science novel by Andy Weir, the film is being directed by Ridley Scott and has all the makings of a true space classic.

One of the things you need to know about the story is the main character is optimism personified.  I mean really.  Here this guy is, stranded on Mars, completely cut off from all other human life, and he endures.  Mark Watney will be played by Matt Damon, and I have to say, this may be some of the best book-to-film casting in a long time.

The main jist of the book revolves around the Ares manned mission to Mars, and her crew.  Specifically, one member of the crew who gets stranded during a sandstorm.

The rest of the crew fears him dead, and follows emergency evacuation procedures to board their return vessel and leave the surface.

Needless to say, Mark Watney is NOT dead, and the botanist/engineer has to find a way to survive by “sciencing the SHIT out of the planet”.

In this clip, we have the beginning of Watney’s log, which is one of the ways in the book the story is told from his point of view:

I am so damn excited for this movie I can’t even contain it, you guys.  Pretty sure this will mark Ridley Scott’s return to excellence.  If you missed it, here is the official trailer that JUST released:

The Martian hits theaters November 25th, 2015.
