SPOILER FREE Avengers: Infinity War Review- You Are Not Ready

The time has finally come, Marvel Cinematic Universe Fans, for Avengers: Infinity War. After 10 years and an astounding 18 freaking feature films, Thanos has come to face off with Earth’s mightiest heroes.

It’ll be hard to talk about the results without spoilers, so a few ground rules.  One, I assume that you’ve seen the trailers.  (Yes, there are some fans who outright refuse to see ANY trailers or promo materials so they can go in as fresh as possible.) Two, I assume you’ve got a basic understanding of who the characters are.  (I.e. you’ve seen most if not all the previous MCU films.) Three, that you’ll be seeing Infinity War soon and will come back for a more in-depth review.

All that said, this is what I’m going to talk about-

I will echo my title statement of YOU ARE NOT READY. As much as you think you are, you are NOT.  Comic fans will be beside themselves with joy, several scenes are ripped right from Jim Starling‘s work.  MCU/Marvel Studios fans will weep openly, your feels will have feels.

There is very little I can speak about as far as a true ‘review’ until I can dive into spoilers, but the basis is the team, broken and scattered, comes together again.  There are new leaders, there are new friendships, and some amazing Chris-offs.  The action is good, maybe a little tiny bit disappointing considering the stakes, but seeing so many high ranking moving pieces on the board makes me hesitant to outright say anything negative.

If you have not watched Captain America: Civil War, Doctor Strange, Guardians of the Galaxy vol 2, Thor: Ragnarok, or Black Panther, you should definitely brush up before giving two hours and 40 minutes to Infinity War.  No really, it’s the single longest film in the MCU yet, and the Russo brothers have teased that their rough cut for the still-untiled Avengers: 4 is the single longest cut they’ve made in their career yet.

On the whole, the film is good. Not great, but not bad. It’s not my favorite MCU entry, but it’s also not Iron Man 3 or Thor: The Dark World.  Again, I can’t really complain about ‘the bad’ as I normally do in my breakdowns til I can talk about what actually happens in the flick.

Having seen it twice, once with a reviewing crowd and once with a sold out fan crowd- I can definitely recommend seeing this with a large group. Their reactions will vary, your second time around (because who am I kidding, this will make an insane amount of money, and people will see it more than once) you will want to watch faces and reactions.  The lady next to me last night was amazing to witness experience the story, she was exactly the target demographic (as was I, not gonna lie, I was wearing my Rocket Raccoon costume).

So, I promise that by Monday, you’ll get a spoiler-laden review from me. For now, remember that #ThanosDemandsYourSilence, and if you’re gonna publicly talk about spoilers, maybe do it quietly and with TONS of warnings so you don’t piss someone off.

Avengers: Infinity War is playing in theaters now.
