SDCC Bash ‘Ready Party One’ Was Everything This Side of the OASIS

Admittedly, parties during San Diego Comic-Con are not my personal thing — usually because I a) don’t have the time (early mornings and all that), b) miss out on invites, and c) am so tired after a full day that my bed calls seductively. All that changed this year with Geek Gatsby‘s Ready Player One-themed event, Ready Party One at the Fluxx Nightclub.

Featuring the incredibly awesome ’80s party band The Flux Capacitors as headliners, the sold-out event was part OASIS for RP1 lovers and part rock show. That’s not even mentioning the delightful song stylings of The Library Bards, who were very much in their element at this event. Their takes on top 40 tracks with nerdy elements (Imagine Dragons‘ ‘Radioactive’ became a Zelda tune) had the audience reacting with exuberance and joy with each new song.

Fans of Farscape and Jim Henson’s Creature Shop Challenge know who Gigi Edgley is, and she also was part of the entertainment for the evening taking the stage with her brother Jake to kick off the US leg of their Wanderland Tour. She looked absolutely stunning in a black sequined number, and the Edgleys performed selections by The Eurythmics, No Doubt, The Banges, and more.

I cannot tip my hat enough to the organizers and promotors of the event — from the DeLorean outside to the incredible printed materials and decorations that were literally everywhere inside the Fluxx — the perfect venue and perfect entertainment to celebrate both Ernie Cline‘s book and Steven Spielberg‘s film.

Okay, and the highlight for me personally (aside from the music, because DAMN) was the cosplay from this Parzival and Art3mis. He even MOVED like Z’s avatar, but danced 10x better. Her dress had lights and moved like liquid, and I couldn’t stop watching them on the dance floor. I wore my personal take on movie-version James Halliday (Jamie, because girl), and the pair were kind enough to take a photo with me.

Geek Gatsby is actually throwing another party TONIGHT after the con is done — you can find details for it here.

Enjoy your Comic-Con, and be excellent to each other!
