New Art for “Star Trek: Picard” Series Fully Engaged

CBS ALL ACCESS’s “Star Trek: Picard” series is a hot topic right now, and we’re very excited to share some new art for it featuring Sir Patrick Stewart, and a canine companion.

The official #StarTrekPicard key art is here. Will you be joining @SirPatStew at @Comic_Con next week? #SDCC #StarTrekSDCC pic.twitter.com/sf7ZnDmXlL

Obviously, Stewart is back as former Enterprise Captain Jean Luc Picard, and the series (as we can tell from the first teaser released) will center on his needing to come out of retirement for some great catastrophe.

Hannelle Culpepper will have the historic distinction of being the first woman to launch a “Star Trek” series from the captain’s- we mean director’s chair, as she’ll be helming the first two episodes of “Picard”.

Former commanding officer Jonathan Frakes will also be on board to direct episodes 3 and 4 of the first season, and may possibly (we’re assuming it’s likely) return as William Riker. You can read his recent interview with Trek Movie.com here.

The last bit of news we heard was that Michael Chabon will be serving as showrunner. Slightly disappointing only because early reports had Culpepper in the role.

Alison Pill (The Newsroom), Harry Treadaway (Penny Dreadful) and Isa Briones, We already knew that Santiago Cabrera (Heroes, Che) and Michelle Hurd (Marvel’s Daredevil, Blindspot) were on board for the series. There are of course, no details yet about who Cabrera and Hurd will be playing.

Star Trek: Discovery showrunner Alex Kurtzman, who will be serving as an executive producer on Picard, had this to say about the show; comparing it to DISCO, and how it’ll be totally different:

“It’s an extremely different rhythm than Discovery. Discovery is a bullet. ‘Picard’ is a very contemplative show. It will find a balance between the speed of Discovery and the nature of what Next Gen was, but I believe it will have its own rhythm.

Without revealing too much about it, people have so many questions about Picard and what happened to him, and the idea we get to take time to answer those questions in the wake of the many, many things he’s had to deal with in Next Gen is really exciting. ‘More grounded’ is not the right way to put it, because season 2 of Discovery is also grounded. It will feel more… real-world? If that’s the right way to put it.”

Alex Kurtzman, Michael Chabon, Akiva Goldsman, James Duff, Patrick Stewart, Heather Kadin, will serve as executive producers, as well as Rod Roddenberry, and Trevor Roth executive producing for Roddenberry Entertainment. Aaron Baiers will co-executive produce, and Kirsten Beyer is a supervising producer.

No word on a release date yet, but we’ll probably learn that next week during CBS ALL ACCESS’s block of “Star Trek” panels during San Diego Comic Con (SDCC), so check back for that.
