Back in 1986, fast food giant McDonald‘s introduced a new character to their fans. Cosmc, the alien. While not as popular or enduring as the Hamburglar or Grimace, Cosmc certainly made an impact. Enough so that the chain is giving him his own offshoot restaurant.

“What would happen if a McDonald’s character from the 1980s that was part alien, part surfer, part robot — what would happen if this character were to open a restaurant in 2023?” CEO Chris Kempczinski asked. Well, we’re about to find out.

McDonald’s opened the first of several planned locations this past weekend in Bolingbrook, IL. The menu offers a wide selection of cold beverages, some familiar MickeyD’s fare, and wholly new items.

CosMc’s “is a small format concept with all the DNA of McDonald’s but its own unique personality,” Kempczinski said. The hope is to roll out about 10 additional locations, all in Texas, in 2024. Could this idea possibly compete with coffee and café giant Starbucks? Only time will tell.
