Lucasfilm Addresses Using CGI To Recreate Carrie Fisher In Future Star Wars Films

Earlier this week news was emerging that seemed to imply that Disney and Lucasfilm has been in negotiations with the family of Carrie Fisher regarding the possible future use of  her likeness. Now it seems that things have gotten to a point that Lucasfilm felt the need to step in and make a public statement via starwars.com:

We want to assure our fans that Lucasfilm has no plans to digitally recreate Carrie Fisher’s performance as Princess or General Leia Organa.

Carrie Fisher was, is, and always will be a part of the Lucasfilm family. She was our princess, our general, and more importantly, our friend. We are still hurting from her loss. We cherish her memory and legacy as Princess Leia, and will always strive to honor everything she gave to Star Wars.

So it remains to be seen whether the original story was some other negotiations between the family and the house of the mouse, such as the use of her likeness at one or more of Disney parks as a statue, or if the latest statement is something to just calm the furor that had erupted after the original story broke. The statement does say “no plans..” which also implies “at the moment…” so only time will tell if we see Fisher on the screen as General Leia once again.

While there is never a good side to such a loss, all of her scenes had been completed for the upcoming Star Wars, Episode VIII when she passed away last month from a heart attack while en route to Los Angeles for the holidays after a book signing in London.
