Jamie Lee Curtis Nabs Film Rights to Sara Cunningham’s Memoir

Imagine, if you will, a mother who volunteers her time to stand in for non-supportive parents at your LGBTQ+ wedding. That’s exactly who Sara Cunningham is, and thanks to Jamie Lee Curtis, we’ll be (more than likely) getting a film about her story.

Cunningham went viral in 2018 with her “stand-in mom” social media post, offering to attend weddings in the place of parents who wouldn’t:

PSA. If you need a mom to attend your same sex wedding because your biological mom won’t. Call me. I’m there. I’ll be your biggest fan. I’ll even bring the bubbles.

This started a snowball effect of other moms [and dads] offering to do the same, in a beautiful show of what social media can do when we use it for good.

The movement caught the attention of one Jamie Lee Curtis, who has purchased the rights to adapt Cunningham’s 2014 memoir, How We Sleep At Night, which chronicles Cunningham’s relationship with her gay son.

Curtis shared this image, calling Cunningham her doppelgänger, and teasing fans to “stay tuned”:

Curtis said in an interview with The Washington Post:

“I was moved by her journey. And I continue to be thrilled as her movement is catching on. I hope to do justice to her story and the story of so many marginalized people in the LGBTQ community.

I saw the impact that her movement has already had, in and around Oklahoma City,” Curtis said. “It’s exciting to watch something that was born out of such conflict develop into something of such deep compassion and expansive acceptance.”
