We are very sorry to share the news that comics artist Tim Sale has passed away. Perhaps best known for his work on “The Long Halloween,” Sale’s work was credited as a major source of inspiration for Matt Reeves‘ “The Batman.”

Fellow artist and longtime friend Richard Starkings first posted the news. Sale’s official social media accounts shortly thereafter confirmed it. Outpourings of love and shared memories from the comic creator community followed.

It was with heavy heavy heart that I have to announce that my closest friend and comrade in comics Tim Sale @ArtBySale has passed away peacefully today, June 16th. @DemSortie Susan Bailey, thank you for being the love of his life, he adored you ❤️ pic.twitter.com/8Ze3NXn2do
