Funko Purchases Mondo, Cinephiles Not Sure What to Think

Funko, pop culture giant best known for their highly collectable Pop Vinyls, has purchased Mondo. Probably most recognizable for their incredible high-end specialty prints, movie posters, vinyl releases and other times, Mondo is a favorite among cinephile collectors.

“Mondo’s devoted fanbase and high-end pop culture collectibles make it the perfect complement to Funko’s current portfolio of brands,” Funko CEO Andrew Perlmutter said. “By leveraging our international distribution and licensing network, we feel well positioned to expedite the growth of the Mondo brand.”

“Over the past few months, we searched exhaustively to find a perfect partner who saw what was unique and special about Mondo and was in a position to meaningfully invest in Mondo, nurture the team, and further its reach and vision,” Alamo Drafthouse founder and executive chairman Tim League said. “Funko is exactly that unicorn. The team that made Mondo amazing is staying together, making the transition to Funko, and will continue their same work with the same creative vision.”

“Mondo will operate as a unique brand in the portfolio, gradually integrating into common back-end functions where it increases efficiency or makes sense.”

Mondo themselves said of the news- “We are still the same company that started in the theater lobby… only now with even more resources to support our vision. We can’t wait to show you what’s next.”

We’re actually kind of excited for this. Especially finding out many of the Mondo employees are making the move. Hopefully this means the aesthetics and quality we’ve come to know from the company continues as well. It’s worth noting former Disney CEO Bob Iger (we miss you) is part of Peter Chernin’s Chernin Group, who became 25% shareholders for Funko last month.

We’ll let you know what we hear about this and other news.
