D23 Details: Marvel’s Disney+ “What If?” Series Will be 23 Episodes

Perhaps one of the Marvel Studios titles we’re most excited about hitting Disney’s streaming service Disney+ is the upcoming “What If?” series, continuing the alternate-reality classic comics.

There are a few things we know for sure about the series, thanks to the original announcement at San Diego Comic Con (SDCC) 2019’s Marvel Studios panel in Hall H, as well as the information shared during this weekend’s D23 event in Anaheim, Ca..

The cast, revealed during the SDCC panel, is pretty damn impressive minus some big names (Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans most notably).

Early reports stated that the first entry of this series will center around Peggy Carter (voiced by her MCU live-action self, Hayley Atwell) and “What If” SHE, instead of Steve Rogers, took the serum and became the super soldier.

We know this to be correct now, as these two images of Peggy were shown during yesterday’s panel.

In addition to this, there was footage shown of what’s coming in the series, like Captain America as a freaking MARVEL ZOMBIE, as well as Jeffry Wright’s character, The Watcher.

Cut to today, and the confirmation that “What If?” will actually be 23 episodes, the number of films in phases 1-3 of Marvel Studio’s Marvel Cinematic Universe.

As a refresher, those titles in the Infinity Saga are:

Phase One (available on Amazon): “Iron Man,” “The Incredible Hulk,” “Iron Man 2,” “Thor,” “Captain America: The First Avenger,” and “Marvel’s The Avengers”

Phase Two (available on Amazon): “Iron Man 3,” “Thor: The Dark World,” “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” “Guardians of the Galaxy,” “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” and “Ant-Man.”

Phase Three (not complete, but has everything up to “Ragnarok” with an additional set expected next year, available on Amazon): “Captain America: Civil War,” “Doctor Strange,” “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2,” “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” “Thor: Ragnarok,” “Black Panther,” “Avengers: Infinity War,” “Ant-Man and The Wasp,” “Captain Marvel,” “Avengers: Endgame,” and “Spider-Man: Far From Home.”

Theoretically, this means we *could* be getting one “What If?” episode for each of the films.

The Disney+ streaming service is set to launch on November 12th, with “What If?” hitting sometime in summer of 2021.
