“Atomic Blonde” Sequel in the Works, Could Happen at Netflix

Perhaps one of the best examples of why a female James Bond film would not only work, but be absolutely amazing, is the Charlize Theron-starring “Atomic Blonde” film. It’s gritty darkly saturated Cold War-era stylization and top notch fight choreography (as well as some of the best theatrical needle drops in years) made it a spy film of epic proportions.

We revisit the apartment fight often, the absolute exhaustion of both Lorraine (Theron) and her opponents as they try to kill each other while taking hits its masterfully done from all angles; performance, design, execution, and delivery. It’s also one of the reasons we would absolutely LOVE to have a sequel.

As luck would have it, Theron says that quarantine has been sort of a blessing in disguise for those of us who want a follow-up film. While doing press for the recently released Netflix film “The Old Guard,” she told The Hollywood Reporter that work had begun in earnest on a sequel to “Atomic Blonde.”

THR: While (Atomic Blonde filmmaker) Dave Leitch told me that the ball is in Netflix’s court, is there any good news to report on the further adventures of Lorraine Broughton?

Theron: Yes, we’re in the development stages right now, and that’s the one thing that lockdown has been good for — being able to develop with writers over Zoom. So, we’re actively developing [an Atomic Blonde sequel] right now.

Theron followed this news up with a tidbit to TotalFilm, stating that Netflix was being courted to pick up the project.

Theron: “We took [Atomic Blonde 2] to them and Scott Stuber [Head of Original Films at Netflix] was really interested in it. We talked to him about it extensively, and we’re in the process of writing it right now. That character was set up in a way where she didn’t really reveal much of herself. So I feel like there’s a lot of potential there. The bar’s pretty high, but we’re excited about it.”

“Atomic Blonde” was based on the graphic novel “The Coldest City,” written by Anthony Johnston and illustrated by Sam Hart, and the film was directed by David Leitch (“Deadpool“). If you’ve never seen the film, do yourself a favor and pick up the 4K here, you won’t regret it.

Ok so yes, we’re REALLY hopeful Netflix moves forward with a possible “Atomic Blonde” sequel, that would be some really great news in an otherwise pretty horrible month.
