Amazon’s ‘Lord of the Rings’ Series Teases/Confirms The Second Age Setting?

If you’ve been following along on Twitter with the map reveals from Amazon Studios’ upcoming Lord of the Rings tv series, you’ve more than likely seen the most recent update. If you haven’t, let us explain.

Amazon's 'Lord of the Rings' Series Teases/Confirms The Second Age Setting?
Numenor, the little island there in the bottom corner, is like Middle Earth Atlantis. It sunk, during the end of the Second Age, so clearly, the series will be taking place before then, since it’s included on the map.

Elrond’s brother Elros was the first king of Numenor. The island sort of kind of hung out by themselves for the better part of 600 years, until Eldarion decided to start sailing back and forth from Numenor to the mainland, opening dialog with man. This is widely believed to be the basis for the Great Alliance of Elves and Men, who would go on to defeat Sauron the first time.

Which would actually be a super interesting storyline for the series, or possible offshoot series, to cover.

It is worth noting that the only map of Numenor in the works of JRR Tolkien is in “Unfinished Tales“, which Christopher Tolkien cobbled together from his father’s works. Perhaps a re-read is in order.

We’ll let you know if/when Amazon Studios confirms….anything…about the Lord of the Rings series.
