Amazon’s “Wheel of Time” Casts Their al’Lan Mandragoran!

We are so pleased to report that Amazon Studios upcoming live-action adaptation of Robert Jordan’s (later Brandon Sanderson, who finished the 14-book series following Jordan’s death) “Wheel of Time” series just announced yet another big important casting choice.

The character of al’Lan Mandragoran (or as we readers know him, Lan), is the last of the Malkier royals. Think Aragorn- king of a forgotten kingdom, warrior unlike any other. That type of guy, but he’s also a Warder, the strong male arm of the Aes Sedai (female magic users) Moiriane (who will be played by Rosamund Pike).

According to the official Wheel of Time on Amazon Twitter account, Lan will be played by Daniel Henry.

"I swear to stand against the Shadow so long as iron is hard and stone abides – to defend the Malkieri while one drop of blood remains. I swear to avenge what cannot be defended." Welcome @danielhenney as al'Lan Mandragoran. #TwitterOfTime #WoTWednesday pic.twitter.com/Gg5h1ly5Zp

You can read about all the other casting announcements that happened last month here, including Rand, Matt, Perrin, Nynaeve, Egwene Al’Vere, and more.

When the series was officially announced by Amazon, the offered logline was….interesting, considering the main character shift.

The fantasy epic is set in a sprawling, epic world where magic exists, but only women can use it. The story follows Moiraine, a member of the shadowy and influential all-female organization called the Aes Sedai, as she embarks on a dangerous, world-spanning journey with five young men and women. Moiraine believes that one of them might be the reincarnation of an incredibly powerful individual, whom prophecies say will either save humanity or destroy it. The series draws on numerous elements of European and Asian culture and philosophy, most notably the cyclical nature of time found in Buddhism and Hinduism.

Last we heard, the series was moving forward with Westworld‘s Ute Briesewitz on board to direct the first two episodes of the tale. Showrunner Rafe Judkins shared the news, and we adored his admission that Briesewitz “can pronounce Nynaeve like she was born to it,” something with fans of the Village Wisdom have been fighting about for years.

The Wheel of Time turns, and Ages come and pass, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth, and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth comes again.

No release date is set for the series yet, but we’ll let you know what we hear about that, as well as any additional casting announcements. Like Thom! And Bella!
