Every so often, you come across an interview that sparks something while reading it. We just happened to come across one such from the Tampa Bay Times– an interview with actor Dave Bautista. Read it, read it, read it.

You’ve probably seen the choicest tidbits being run by other sites- namely the James Gunn comments- but the entire interview is one that may make you change your mind on the man behind Guardians of the Galaxy character Drax.

The description of Bautista from author Christopher Spata is almost elegant in its simplicity, you really do get the feeling that his is “DAVE”, rather than the persona of former WWE Heavy Weight Champion.

But also don’t compare him to other former wrestlers- he hates it:

“Do not compare me to The Rock or John Cena. Everyone does it. Those guys are wrestlers who became movie stars. I’m … something else. I was a wrestler. Now, I’m an actor.”

He wants to be a serious actor, a desire that maybe some fans will laugh at, but one rewatch of his performance in Blade Runner: 2049 as Sapper will prove his ability in dramatic roles.

    “You’ve never seen a miracle.”

“I want good roles. I don’t care about Fast and Furious or Bumblebee. … That’s not the kind of stardom I want. … I want to be in Dune. I want to work with Denis Villeneuve. I want to work with Sam Mendes and Jodie Foster. I want to work with Academy Award winners. I’m proud to be a character actor. I want that respect and credibility and education.”

We truly can’t wait to see what he brings to the role of Beast Raban in Villeneuve’s Dune at Legendary, and we’re hoping that Bautista will look into writing/directing sometime soon.
