HBO’s much acclaimed anthology series True Detective is coming back for a third season, and today the cable network shared the first teaser trailer for it.

This season stars Oscar winner Mahershala Ali (Moonlight, Luke Cage) as Wayne Hays, a state police detective from Northwest Arkansas. We also see glimpses of Carmen Ejogo (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, Selma) as Amelia Reardon, Mamie Gummer (The Ward) as Lucy Purcell, and Scoot McNairy (Halt and Catch Fire, Godless) as Tom in the teaser.

In the director’s chair(s) this season we’ve got Jeremy Saulnier (even though he left the project early due to scheduling conflicts), series creator Nic Pizzolatto, and Daniel Sackheim (The Leftovers). Both Pizzolatto and Sackheim stepped in to finish the season after Saulnier’s departure.

    Officially, season three’s logline reads:

The next installment of True Detective tells the story of a macabre crime in the heart of the Ozarks, and a mystery that deepens over decades and plays out in three separate time periods.

HBO says True Detective will return for season 3 come January 1st 2019.
