Showtime is home to one of those special “real world” series that continues to bend the genre on what a family drama can be. We’re speaking, of course, of the much-acclaimed Shameless.

The series was renewed for a ninth season, and we’ve finally got our first look at what the next season will hold for the Gallagher clan:

The cable network says a political fervor will hit the South Side in season 9 of Shameless, and the Gallaghers are taking justice into their own hands. Frank (William H. Macy) sees financial opportunity in campaigning and decides to give voice to the underrepresented South Side working man. Fiona (Emmy Rossum) tries to build on her success with her apartment building and takes an expensive gamble hoping to catapult into the upper echelon. Lip (Jeremy Allen White) distracts himself from the challenges of sobriety by taking in Eddie’s niece, Xan (Amirah Johnson), and Ian (Cameron Monaghan) sees the Gay Jesus movement takes a destructive turn.

Shameless returns on Sunday, September 9th at 9 p.m. on SHOWTIME.
