Worst News: Nation-Wide Boba Shortage Causing Chaos

Just when we thought there was light at the end of the tunnel- here comes the next pandemic. Apparently there is a nation-wide shortage of boba on the horizon. This of course comes as a shock for those of us who count on the treat for our afternoon pick-me-ups.

    What’s the actual problem?

Unfortunately for boba fans, the tapioca starch used to make the ‘pearls,’ as well as the already-made pearls are being delayed. The tapioca and pearls originate in Thailand, and are being held up en route to various ports across the USA. Because these two ingredients are such an integral part of milk teas and boba drinks, any delays in product deliveries are causing additional issues.

San Francisco company Boba Guys shared a PSA last week detailing the issue, and what the shortage will look like for consumers.

It’s sounding pretty bad, not gonna lie.

“This is an industry-wide shortage. Some boba shops are already out. Others will run out in the next few weeks. Ninety-nine percent of boba comes from overseas,” Boba Guys said.

So, don’t be surprised if you are unable to get that thai tea with boba next week.
