CBS is ready to embark on a 5 year mission with Star Trek: Discovery interm showrunner Alex Kurtzman. Following the exit of the two previous showrunners on the CBS All Access series, Kurtzman stepped into the position to continue production on season 2 of the 6th live-action Star Trek tv show.

Variety broke the news this morning that Kurtzman has entered into a 5-year contract with CBS All Access to supervise the expansion of CBS’ Star Trek franchise for television. This includes developing new live-action series,  possible mini-series, and possibly animation among other things.

While there is no official word from either CBS or from Kurtzman, Variety goes on to say that the potential new shows are said to include:

    • A series set at Starfleet Academy from creators Stephanie Savage and Josh Schwartz. The duo most recently developed the CW’s reboot of “Dynasty” and previously created shows like “Gossip Girl” and Hulu and Marvel’s “Runaways.”
    • A limited series whose plot details are being kept under wraps.
    • A limited series based around the “Wrath of Khan” story. Khan’s full name is Khan Noonien Singh. He was famously portrayed by Ricardo Montalbán in both the original series episode “Space Seed” and again in the film “Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan.” Benedict Cumberbatch then played the character in the 2013 film “Star Trek Into Darkness.”
    • An animated series whose plot details are being kept under wraps.
