The 90th Oscars Nominations Happen Tomorrow Morning; Here’s How to Watch/Listen

The Academy Awards, which present the Oscars, are arguably the biggest night of awards season in the world. Celebrating the absolute pinnacle of filmmaking, performance, and production, the 90th edition of the event will announce their nominees for the year tomorrow morning.

To watch the presentation of the reading of the nominees, you have a couple of options. There is the livestream that’ll happen on Oscar.go.com, and also over on Oscars.org. There will also be various networks broadcasting announcement, as well as YouTube and a few other streaming options, like Twitter.

What time, you may ask? As per the Oscars website:

At 5:22 a.m. PST, the nominees will be announced in the following categories (listed here in no particular order): Cinematography, Costume Design, Film Editing, Makeup and Hairstyling, Original Score, Production Design, Animated Short Film, Live Action Short Film, Sound Editing, Sound Mixing and Visual Effects.

At 5:38:30 a.m. PST, the nominees will be announced in the following categories (listed here in no particular order): Actor in a Leading Role, Actor in a Supporting Role, Actress in a Leading Role, Actress in a Supporting Role, Animated Feature Film, Directing, Documentary Feature, Documentary Short Subject, Foreign Language Film, Original Song, Best Picture, Adapted Screenplay and Original Screenplay.

Some interesting tidbits about the Oscars: since the very first awards banquet on May 16th, 1929 (which took place in the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel’s Blossom Room), 3,048 statuettes have been presented in the various categories. The first recipient of the first Oscar was Emil Jannings, named Best Actor for his performances in The Last Command and The Way of All Flesh in 1929.

The statuette (technically called the Academy Award of Merit) stands 13 and a half inches tall in all his golden glory, and weighs in around 8 and a half pounds. According to some Oscar lore, the nickname for the statue may have come from Academy librarian (and eventual executive director) Margaret Herrick after she remarked that the statue resembled her Uncle Oscar. The Academy didn’t adopt the nickname officially until 1939, but it was widely known enough by 1934 that Hollywood columnist Sidney Skolsky mentioned the nickname in an article referring to Katharine Hepburn‘s first Best Actress win for Morning Glory Anywho (seriously, that’s a real movie).

The 90th Academy Awards, with returning host Jimmy Kimmel, will take place on Sunday March 4th, 2018 and will air live on ABC. Hopefully, there will not be an embarrassing mixup like there was last year with the La La Land–Moonlight envelope fiasco during the final award of the night for best picture.
