Probably one the most enduring roles of Michael Keaton‘s film career, the undead trickster Beetlejuice continues to speak to fans on all planes of existence. Fans of Tim Burton‘s 1988 classic dead-undead-dead comedy have taken up the cause of producing a documentary about the groundbreaking special effects and production woes behind the film. And they need your help to make their project happen!

Documentary For The Recently Deceased just launched their crowdfunding campaign on IndieGoGo two days ago, and has already hit 9% of their $23,000 fixed goal.

The project is described as a retrospective documentary about the creation and making of the 1988 Beetlejuice Tim Burton film. On the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the film’s release, the two-hour independent documentary made by fans for fans will “take you to the heart of this cult classic from the 1980s.”

The scene of the documentary will be an overhead shot echoing the introduction to the movie in the small town of East Corinth, Vermont. The team says they will have interviews with the inhabitants who will share their memories of the shooting that took place there in 1987. Their stories will be illustrated with period photos from the set, and various other treats from the archives.

This is the first of two planned campaigns; this first leg’s purpose is to to help the team getting started on the project. This includes a first wave of interviews, along with the aforementioned filming in East Corinth. The second campaign will be to help finish the interviews and to do the post-production for the documentary.

Director Fred China (fan of Beetlejuice and films of the 1980s in general) calls this documentary is his “love letter” back to the film. Over the years, he came across never before seen pictures and videos from the original Beetlejuice production, and wanted to create a documentary for other fans of the film.
