One long standing tradition we’ve come to expect from animation house Pixar is the addition of a new short anytime we get a new full length feature. Finding Nemo had “Knick Knack”, Monsters Inc had “For The Birds”, Inside Out had “Lava” (all the crying ever), and Finding Dory had “Piper”.
The Emeryville company is looking to expand their current dynamics, launching what Pixar technical artist and short film producer David Lally is calling an “experimental story program” division with upcoming short, “Smash and Grab”.

The description from the tweet reads:
In 2016, Pixar launched an internal, experimental storytelling initiative to enable new creative voices and explore alternative storytelling techniques, pipelines, and workflows in production. Within the new program, filmmakers are granted total creative freedom to develop a story, design a world, and produce a short film, within six months, and without any executive supervision. “Smash and Grab” is a seven minute short film that explores the use of a comic book development process, virtual production, performance/camera capture, and procedural shading and lighting techniques.
“Smash and Grab” is directed by Brian Larsen, who was head of story on the Oscar-winning short Piper and story supervisor on Brave.
