Taika Waititi To Save Every One of Us with “Flash Gordon” Animated Film

Rumors have been swirling for years that a new take on the classic science fiction serial “Flash Gordon” was being developed in one medium or another. It was just announced that Taika Waititi will be helming an animated version of the savior of the universe for Disney / FOX.

Waititi most recently directed “Thor: Ragnarok” for Disney’s Marvel Studios, and is currently working on his next film, “JoJo Rabbit” about a young boy in Hitler’s army discovers that his mother is hiding a Jewish girl from the Nazis. Waititi will be playing the boy’s imaginary best friend, Hitler.

Last we heard (back in 2018), Julius Avery had been named as writer/director for the project for FOX, but that was before the Disney purchase of the studio went into effect.

In March of 2019, there were rumblings that the project was still going forward, but nothing really concrete until today. “Kingsman” director Matthew Vaughn had originally said that Disney and Marvel Studios’ “Guardians of the Galaxy” films were why audiences wouldn’t be getting a “Flash Gordon” film, but we’re super thrilled he was wrong.

Fans of “Flash Gordon” should check out the documentary “Life After Flash“ which is currently streaming on Amazon now.

This news was first reported by Deadline.
