“Ash Vs Evil Dead”: S1 Blu Ray Is FANTASTIC

How excited were we when STARZ announced their Ash Vs The Evil Dead mini series? Answer: pretty damn excited, especially when the original creator/director Sam Raimi and Ash himself Bruce Campbell were on board.

What can you really say about a low budget horror comedy that launched a thousand super 8 projects and inspired a generation of filmmakers to head to the hills? On it’s endurance in the hearts and minds of fans, there is no question, and STARZ’s original series continues the story of Ash, 20 years after the cracking open of the The Book.

We find Ash living in a (remarkably spacious) airstream trailer, still dealing with the fallout of his ill advised reading from the Necronomicon; a cursed book with the ability to raise the dead and open the gates of hell. It’s been 20 years, and they haven’t been kind to him, (although personally Campbell looks WONDERFUL). Things start to go sideways for him after a night of drinking in a local bar, when he is confronted with a face from his past.

Yes, he’s still working in a Save Mart type of place, albeit for a pissant of a manager.  His closest friend Pablo (Ray Santiago) and co worker Kelly (Dana DeLorenzo) get pulled into the action as the Deadites return to ruin Ash’s life. Police officer Amanda (Jill Marie Jones) sees some shit she can’t easily quantify, and so partners up with Ruby (Lucy Lawless) to track down the man with the chainsaw hand and understand what in the hell is happening.

The series is executive produced by Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert, and Bruce Campbell, who were the original filmmakers of the franchise. Craig DiGregorio (Chuck) serves as executive producer and showrunner.

    Anchor Bay’s release specs:

    Video:
    Codec: MPEG-4 AVC
    Resolution: 1080p
    Aspect ratio: 1.78:1
    Original aspect ratio: 1.78:1

    Audio:
    English: Dolby TrueHD 7.1

    Spanish: Dolby Digital 2.0
    French: Dolby Digital 5.1

    Subtitles:
    English SDH, Spanish

    Discs
    Blu-ray Disc
    Two-disc set (2 BD-50)

    Packaging
    Slipcover in original pressing

The most exciting special feature is the episode commentary from the actors and also creator/executive producer Sam Raimi, co-executive producer Ivan Raimi, and executive producer Rob Tapert.  As far as other “behind the scenes” stuff (which is why I personally go for with Blu-Ray releases), you may be a little disappointed. While not completely packed full of things, there are a few short clips like “How to Kill a Deadite”:

Wanna pick up your own copy (which we HIGHLY suggest)?  Head over to Amazon now to pick up the first season for $24.99!  Ash Vs Evil Dead season 2 is set to premiere on STARZ on October 2nd, 2016.
