Supergirl Is A Go: CBS Commits To Live Action Series

For whatever reason, movie houses and television networks cannot get enough superhero action right now.  But in a move that has surprised most followers of the “bring more solo female heroes to the screen”, the bid for the new Supergirl series went to CBS.

Supergirl Kara Zor-El is the cousin of the Last Son of Krypton Kal-El, whom you’d know better as Superman.  She has had her own comic series since 1972, and even her own film in 1984 which crossed over to the classic Christopher Reeves series.

The character has appeared in countless DC Comics cartoons, and most recently (although it’s almost been 10 years) in The CW’s hit series Smallville, where she was played by Laura Vandervoort.

While there is no word yet on WHO will be donning the mini skirt and cape, we do know who is writing the series.  Executive producer/showrunner on Arrow and The Flash Greg Berlanti and Ali Adler will write the pilot, with the possibility of penning further scripts as the series progresses.

Thus far, the ‘official basic outline’ of the series goes something like this:  “Born on the planet Krypton, Kara Zor-El escaped amid its destruction years ago. Since arriving on Earth, she’s been hiding the powers she shares with her famous cousin. But now at age 24, she decides to embrace her superhuman abilities and be the hero she was always meant to be.”

No word whether this storyline will follow the classic Supergirl story, or if she’ll be soaring to the New 52.
