A new year, a new update from George RR Martin about the state of projects stemming from his iconic “Song of Ice and Fire” saga. Continuing the trend of being our best source of information, GRRM dropped a nugget of news about the status of one of the many planned “Game of Thrones” offshoots.
Obviously we know “House of the Dragon” is returning for season 2 sometime this summer, but what about the other shows? Well, while singing the praises of Netflix’s “Blue Eye Samurai,” Martin teased some animated projects he’s got cooking with HBO.
“As it happens, HBO and I have our own animated projects, set in the world of A SONG OF ICE & FIRE.,” Martin wrote. “None of them have been greenlit yet, but I think we are getting close to taking the next step with a couple of them. When this last round of development started a few years back, we had four ideas for animated shows, with some great talents attached. Writers rooms and summits, outline and scripts followed in due course… but, alas, two of the original projects were subsequently shelved.”
Well, one of those projects, as Martin revealed further down in the NotABlog entry, is about the already announced “Nine Voyages” show, which is expected to follow the escapades of Corlys Velaryon, aka the Sea Snake (Steve Toussaint).
“We have moved ‘NINE VOYAGES,’ our series about the legendary voyages of the Sea Snake, over from live action to animation,” Martin revealed, saying he agreed with the decision. “Budgetary constraints would likely have made a live action version prohibitively expensive, what with half the show taking place at sea, and the necessity of creating a different port every week, from Driftmark to Lys to the Basilisk Isles to Volantis to Qarth to… well, on and on and on. There’s a whole world out there. And we have a lot better chance of showing it all with animation. So we now have three animated projects underway.”
Nothing new to report about the Jon Snow series starring Kit Harrington, though. We’ll let you know what we hear about this and other news.
